Fortune

Focus on the parts of your project involving fortune and risk. Keep in mind that those two things are not the same.

• What parts of your project is truly random? What parts just feel random?

• Does the fortune give people positive feelings of excitement and challenge?
• Does it give people negative feelings of hopelessness and lack of control?
• Would changing your probability distribution curves improve your project?
• Do people have the opportunity to take interesting risks in the project?
• What is the relationship between chance and skill in your project? In what manner can you make random elements feel more like the exercise of a skill?
• In what manner you can make exercising skills feel more like risk-taking?

A project without any of risk and fortune can be completely tasteless. And too much is overwhelming. Get them right, and they bring out the flavour of everything else in your project. You must look into your project to see where elements of risk and randomness naturally arise, and then decide how you can best domesticate them. To find them, look wherever people encounters the unknown.
