A reward is ...

a virtual or physical representation of having accomplished something. Everyone likes to be told they are doing a good job. Determine if your project is giving out the right rewards in the right amounts at the right times.

  • Achievements are often viewed as rewards in and of themselves. How are the achievements perceived?
  • What rewards is your project giving out now? Can it give out others as well?
  • Are people excited when they get rewards in your project, or are they bored by them? Why?
  • Getting a reward you don’t understand is like getting no reward at all. Do people understand the rewards they are getting?
  • Are the rewards given out too regularly? Can they be given out in a more variable way?
  • How are your rewards related to one another? Is there away that they could be better connected?
  • How are your rewards building? Too fast, too slow, or just right?
  • Are your rewards following the SAPS (Status, Access, Power and Stuff) structure?
  • Are your rewards able to turn into a craving?
  • How could you organise that fellow project actors give earned rewards?
  • Can the rewards represent moments/achievement?

A token, a badge, a level, points, really anything defined, as a reward can be a reward. Balancing rewards is different for every project. A designer have to worry about giving out the right ones, at the right times in the right amounts. This can only be determined through trial and error, and probably, it won’t be right for everyone. So often you have to settle for “good enough.”
